New Bee Species Found in Australia

Dr. Kit Prendergast from the Curtin School of Molecular and Life Sciences in Australia has announced her discovery of a new bee species, Leioproctus zephyr, found in Western Australia. The bee has a protruding snout that reminded her of a dog, leading her to name the species after her dog Zepher.

Further research showed that the bee had first been collected in 1979, but never described as a separate species. By naming and acknowledging the new insect, conservationists can extend their efforts to protect its limited habitat.
