Linking Arms to Advance Immunotherapies

Trailblazing the oncology manufacturing frontier

As the incidence of new cancer cases continues to rise, so too do the efforts of drug developers and contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) to not only find a cure but also increase the rate of patient access to life-saving therapies.

These collective efforts are causing an inflection point in the cell and gene therapy industry as it pertains to oncology, with new treatments, such as immunotherapies, and new partnerships redefining the bounds of research and development.

With that, we have joined forces with several trailblazers to advance cancer research and drug development through oncology manufacturing services. This includes joining an alliance with Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapies' (PICI) and partnering with the Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) for Phase I Clinical Trials for solid tumor research.

Advance Your Program

Alliance with the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy

A renowned research institute, PICI brings together a network of pharmaceutical companies, biotechs, non-profits, and researchers to facilitate collaboration, investment in new technologies and companies, and, ultimately, to speed discoveries in cutting-edge cancer therapies. The alliance will offer PICI members and their companies access to our full portfolio of CRO and CDMO services, from research and development through manufacturing and commercialization.

"PICI's mission-focused strategic alliance closely aligns with Charles River's goal of creating healthier lives," said Kerstin Dolph, Corporate Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing, Charles River. "Our extensive work in cell and gene therapy manufacturing, as well as end-to-end discovery and development expertise, provides the institutional knowledge required to drive forward oncology programs, with the ultimate goal of delivering safe, effective treatments to patients."

Supporting Phase I Clinical Trials with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

Charles River is also supporting the CHLA with its Phase I Clinical Trials by manufacturing starting materials for solid tumor research. CHLA is the largest provider of hospital care for children in California and remains at the forefront of pediatric medicine. The hospital was recently granted $6 million from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to develop innovative stem cell approaches to treat children and adolescents with recurrent solid tumors.

"We've partnered closely with CHLA to develop streamlined manufacturing programs to support the development of starting materials for a Phase I Clinical Trial," said Dolph. "Our extensive experience provides the institutional knowledge required to support hospitals like Children's Hospital Los Angeles to accelerate effective treatments to patients."

Across its portfolio, we are dedicated to advancing oncology research and leveraging new technologies and techniques to enhance the ability to deliver life-changing therapeutics to patients.

End-to-end CDMO Serving Clients Globally

With over 20 years of experience as a leading end-to-end CDMO, we service clients globally with plasmid DNA, viral vector, and cell therapy manufacturing. In 2024:

  • We worked on 65% of FDA-approved oncology drugs
  • We helped develop 11 oncology disease drugs for patients

Our integrated approach combines R&D with CMC and biologics testing to maximize knowledge transfer, reduce bottlenecks, and accelerate drug development from discovery to commercialization.

Because every moment matters.
