GMP Cryo-EM Services Coming to Germany

ATEM’s new lab brings specialized services to the market for drug developers

After its initial development in the early 1980s, cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has provided scientists and researchers with a non-destructive way to achieve previously unimaginable levels of detail of biomolecular structures. As is the case for many new and emerging technologies, their true potential takes time to be fully understood and their usage is often limited to the hidden rooms and laboratories within colleges and academic institutions.

However, Dr. Karl Bertram and the team at ATEM Structural Discovery are aiming to change that. A new, state-of-the-art, GMP laboratory has opened in Germany capable of providing GMP-grade cryo-EM services to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. This new facility features state-of-the-art equipment, including two (cryo) electron microscopes and the high-performance computational equipment required to process raw data quickly. ATEM leverages powerful artificial intelligence (AI) technology to answer some of the most sought-after questions about how proteins lead to diseases.

In October 2021, ATEM entered a strategic partnership with Charles River to provide their diverse client base access to ATEM’s cryo-EM service solutions. “We are extremely excited to continue deepening our partnership with ATEM,” said Kerstin Dolph, our Corporate Senior Vice President, Biologics Solutions. “Their ability to provide early insights into lead candidates increases speed and efficiency to our clients, ultimately supporting of the goal of delivering novel therapeutics to patients.”

ATEM’s focus on cryo-EM products enables them to provide their clients a wide range of discovery and analytics services, including the analysis of gene delivery products such as viral vectors and lipid nanoparticles with single particle precision, as well as 3D structural determination of protein targets. However, some of these targets are notoriously difficult to study. Understanding their mechanism of action and interaction with drug (candidate) molecules often reveals essential functional details that are indispensable to accelerating drug design.
