Charles River Licenses Hera Biolabs' SRG Rat

Introducing the first highly immunocompromised model validated for xenograft studies in oncology and infectious disease research

We have signed an agreement to breed, distribute, market, and sell Hera BioLabs' SRG rat to the global preclinical research community.

Unlike other immunodeficient rodent strains, such as the nude rat, the SRG (Sprague Dawley, Rag2, Il2rg- "SRG") is a severely immunodeficient model created through knockout mutations in the Rag2 and Il2rgamma genes that result in mature B, T, and NK cell deficiencies. This severe immunodeficiency, combined with a larger organism size, makes the SRG rat an ideal alternative research model to mice in certain preclinical applications.

You can be confident of the industry-leading quality control and care that goes into every single animal. From diagnostics to genetic testing and surgical/preconditioning services, let us help you achieve your next research milestone – whether it be in discovery or preclinical safety.

Benefits of the SRG Rat for Preclinical Oncology Research

  • High engraftment rates and rapid growth of a variety of human tissues and tumors (for example: VCaP, H358, and HCT116)
  • Severe immunodeficiency ensures high engraftment rates and allows for straightforward reconstitution with human PBMCs
  • Larger organism size allows larger tumor burden and reduces difficulty of procedures such as catherization and blood collection
  • Larger tumor sizes (up to 10x larger compared to mice) allow for serial tissue sampling throughout the treatment routine (robust analysis upon harvest)
