Spinal Nerve Ligation in Rats
Surgical Summary
A dorsal midline skin incision is made to expose the vertebrae. The L4 to L6 spinal nerves are exposed by removing the L6 transverse process. The L5 and L6 spinal nerves are isolated from the surrounding tissue and are tightly ligated with a silk ligature. Fascia and muscle are closed using sutures. The skin incision is closed with wound clips.

Animal Models
Male and female rat models, typically 100-250 g; anatomy and/or physiological limitations may dictate choice of strain, age and weight.
Procedure Details
- Perioperative care: Please view our Pre- and Postoperative Care Sheet.
- Housing: The animals must be group housed with additional bedding.
- Diet: No special diet is required.
- Postoperative holding period: At a minimum, post-op animals are held three days, with the majority of animals shipping within seven days of surgery.
- Maintenance: Incision wound clips should be removed 7-10 days after surgery.
IACUC
The Charles River Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) governs the entire surgical process, including all anesthesia, analgesia, animal preparation, and any postoperative holding in our facilities prior to shipment. Review of experimental protocols, authorization to order animals that are surgically modified from Charles River Laboratories, and all aspects concerning the use of the animals after they arrive at the institution are the responsibility of the receiving institution’s IACUC.
