Let's Talk About Sex Bias in Preclinical Research
One sex is far too often selected over the other in mouse-based research investigating new cures for human diseases. This sometimes happens for sound scientific reasons, and sometimes not. Omitting sex as a biological variable has several consequences - single-sex studies can not only lead to skewed research, translatability issues, and flawed conclusions – it also raises concerns regarding ethical practices and the 3Rs.
Sex bias creates animal welfare challenges related to animal over-production and wastage, insufficient consideration of welfare impact related to differential housing of male vs female animals within research facilities, and a lack of understanding regarding differential requirements for pain recognition and alleviation in male versus female animals.
Charles River is committed to eliminating sex bias in preclinical research and animal overproduction.
