Infusion Pumps for Continuous Dosing of Laboratory Animals
ALZET Osmotic Pumps offer specific advantages over repeated animal dosing by injection or oral gavage, such as:
- Continuous delivery, eliminating peak and trough fluctuations
- Test agent effects develop fully and are easily reproduced, which is particularly advantageous for agents with short half-lives
- Reduction in animal stress that can develop from frequent handling

ALZET Osmotic Pump Details by Study Design
There are 13 models of ALZET Osmotic Pumps in 3 physical sizes, and a variety of release rates and durations.* Dosage variability can be achieved by modifying agent concentration; duration can be extended by serial implantation of the pumps.
Pump Model Volume Duration Release Rate 1003D 100 µl 3 days 1.0 µl/hr 1007D 100 µl 1 week 0.5 µl/hr 1002 100 µl 2 weeks 0.25 µl/hr 1004 100 µl 4 weeks 0.11 µl/hr 1006 100 µl 6 weeks 0.8 µl/hr 2001D 200 µl 1 day 8.0 µl/hr 2001 200 µl 1 week 1.0 µl/hr 2002 200 µl 2 weeks 0.5 µl/hr 2004 200 µl 4 weeks 0.25 µl/hr 2006 200 µl 6 weeks 0.15 µl/hr 2ML1 2 ml 1 week 10 µl/hr 2ML2 2 ml 2 weeks 5.0 µl/hr 2ML4 2 ml 4 weeks 2.5 µl/hr * Lot-specific performance data: The nominal performance is a target for all pumps manufactured. Individual lots of pumps may vary from this target within limits. The actual pumping rate and fill volume of a particular lot (derived by statistical testing) are listed on the top of the instruction sheet included with the pumps.

ALZET Osmotic Pump Details by Animal & Delivery Method
The minimum animal size estimates for Implantation of ALZET Osmotic Pumps are based on experience with male Sprague Dawley rats and Swiss Webster mice. When using the pumps with other strains or genders, these guidelines should be modified accordingly.
