  • Human Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells (HSPCs)

CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells are multipotent and can give rise to all cell types in blood. Cells expressing the CD133+ (AC133, Prominin-1) marker are generally known as primitive hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. CD34+ stem cells are isolated from either mobilized leukopaks, bone marrow, or cord blood, while CD133+ stem cells are isolated from mobilized leukopaks. Fresh mobilized leukopaks, bone marrow aspirate, and unprocessed cord blood units are also available from Charles River as starting source materials for isolation of stem cells. The hematopoietic stem cells are isolated via automated immunomagnetic cell separation techniques (positive selection) and are cryopreserved on-site immediately following collection. All hematopoietic stem cells are collected from healthy human donors who have consented under an IRB approved protocol.

    • Mobilized CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells are isolated same day and onsite from mobilized leukopaks after single or dual mobilization agents are administered to healthy donors. Currently, mobilized peripheral blood is the predominant source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells for research support and clinical use. This is primarily due to accessibility, relative ease of sourcing, high stem cell yields, and increased recallability potential for the donors leading to source material consistency. Charles River offers cryopreserved isolated CD34+ stem cells as well as fresh mobilized leukopaks from different dosing regimens. Mobilized CD34+ stem cells are available in four different cryopreserved vialing formats including 1M, 5M, 10M or 25M cells/vial.

    • Bone marrow-derived CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells are isolated same day and onsite from bone marrow aspirate collected from healthy donors. Generally, bone marrow derived CD34+ stem cells are associated with low risk of graft versus host disease (GVHD) but are slow to engraft. Bone marrow derived CD34+ stem cells are available in four different cryopreserved vialing formats including 100K, 250K and 500K cells/vial, as well as 1M cells/vial.

    • Cord blood-derived CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells are primitive and are associated with fewer immune system incompatibilities, such as HLA mismatch issues, with lowest risk of GVHD but no potential for donor recallability. Cord blood-derived CD34+ stem cells are available in three different cryopreserved vialing formats including 100K and 500K cells/vial, as well as 1M cells/vial.

    • Mobilized CD133+ hematopoietic stem cells are isolated using positive immunomagnetic cell separation procedures from a mobilized leukapheresis collection. CD133+ stem cells are capable of a high level of proliferation and a wide range of differentiation. Mobilized CD133+ stem cells are available in 3 different cryopreserved vialing formats including 1M, 2.5M, and 5 million cells/vial.

  • Human Bone Marrow

Our human bone marrow portfolio includes bone marrow aspirate, isolated CD34+ stem cells, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Bone marrow aspirate is a rich source of a large concentration of primitive CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells as well as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Bone marrow is used in the investigation of regenerative medicine for the treatment of various disease types including blood disorders and other immune or genetic diseases.

    • We offer fresh bone marrow aspirate suitable for research-use-only projects as well as GMP-compliant bone marrow for clinical studies and transplantation. The bone marrow aspirate is drawn from the posterior iliac crest from healthy human donors who have consented under an IRB-approved protocol. Fresh bone marrow aspirate is available as a 50-mL or 100-mL unit.

    • Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes, myocytes, and neurons. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are cultured from freshly collected human bone marrow aspirate and are then cryopreserved at 1M cells/vial.

  • Human Cord Blood

Our cord blood product portfolio includes unprocessed cord blood and isolated CD34+ stem cells. Umbilical cord blood is known to be a rich source of the most primitive type of CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells and which can be easily isolated using positive immunomagnetic cell separation procedures. Cord blood is collected aseptically at the time of delivery from consented healthy pregnant women under an IRB-approved protocol. Fresh unprocessed cord blood is available either as a 0.5  – 1B total nucleated cells (TNC) unit or > 1B TNC unit.

  • Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs)

Human-induced pluripotent stem cells are generated by reprogramming adult somatic cells (typically skin or blood cells) back into an embryonic-like pluripotent state. Human iPSCs retain the genome of the donor, can regenerate indefinitely, and can undergo differentiation into virtually any cell type of interest.

We offer wild-type iPSC lines cryopreserved in 1.2 mL-threaded cryogenic vials with a 1 mL fill volume and are available as a standard bank vial size of 1M cells per vial or as a high-density (ready-to-differentiate) vial size of either 25M or 100M cells per vial.

All iPSC lines are highly characterized, procured under current Good Tissue Practice (cGTP), conform to Global Ethical Standards and Clinical Cell Regulations, and are intended for research use.

  • Human Embryonic Stem Cells (ES Cells)

Human embryonic stem cells have an unlimited capacity for self-renewal and are pluripotent with the potential to differentiate into every cell type in the body. We offer a wide variety of wild-type and diseased human ES cell lines for research use. The ES cells are cryopreserved in 1.2 mL-threaded cryogenic vials with a 1 mL fill volume and are available as a standard bank vial size of >0.5M cells per vial or as a high-density (ready-to-differentiate) vial size of either 25M or 100M cells per vial.

The ES cell lines are highly characterized and conform to the Global Ethical Standards and Clinical Cell Regulations with complete donor history and testing information. The human embryonic stem cell lines are registered with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and are eligible for use in NIH-funded research.
