A Partnership with Bruker to Check All Your Boxes

In 2013, we announced a partnership with Bruker to provide rapid, accurate microbial identifications to the industrial microbiology market, including pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, home and personal care, and other manufacturing industries.

Through this agreement, we are able to offer the Axcess system, which combines the benefits of the Bruker MALDI Biotyper with a custom data analysis software solution, allowing for instantaneous access to the Accugenix microbial database for identifications.

For over a decade, this partnership allowed us to develop extensive knowledge and expertise in the field, maximize performance for environmental monitoring applications, and simplify customers’ validation commitments.

“We are delighted to be working with Charles River on the distribution of the MALDI Biotyper into the industrial and pharmaceutical microbiology markets. From my experience, the technical and sales teams that Charles River brings to this effort are among the best and most respected in these industries, (…) With Charles River products in virtually every pharmaceutical microbiology laboratory, we are looking forward to working with Charles River to expand our efforts to make the MALDI Biotyper the new standard in microbial identification for industrial microbiology”

Dr Gary Kruppa, Vice President of Business Development at Bruker

“By partnering with Bruker Daltonics, the recognised industry leader in MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, we have reinforced our mutual commitment to meeting our customers’ microbial identification needs with innovative and comprehensive environmental monitoring solutions. Our entire team here at Charles River is excited to introduce the Axcess System to the market and to represent the MALDI Biotyper by providing the same professionalism, responsiveness and expertise Bruker is known for.’’

FAQs About MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

  • What does the acronym MALDI-TOF stand for?

    MALDI-TOF stands for Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight.

  • Is mass spectrometry a recognized technology for microbiology testing?

Current trends indicate acceptance of MALDI-TOF technology for microbiology testing in the pharmaceutical, medical device, and consumer care markets when paired with industry-relevant microbial databases. Using MALDI-TOF for microbiology testing lowers the cost of routine identifications in your Environmental Monitoring (EM) program.

  • Why are microbial organism libraries important for accurate identification with mass spectrometry?

While MALDI-TOF significantly improves accuracy compared to phenotypic methods, any identification technology is only as good as the database that it references. The MALDI-TOF instrument software can’t identify something it has never seen before, therefore, access to relevant, validated microorganism reference libraries is critical for optimizing the identification rate. A better identification rate helps maximize the return on your capital investment due to reduced occurrences of low confidence IDs or no IDs that can result in significant, unexpected outsourcing costs and potentially delay product release.

  • Can MALDI-TOF identify mold?

MALDI-TOF can identify molds using an ethanol extraction method, increasing the repeatability and reliability of acquiring spectra for identifications. Our library, combined with our innovative sample processing approach using a specialized media, Conidia IDFP Agar Plates, generates significantly higher identification rates compared to the industry average.

  • If I transition from outsourcing with Accugenix to an in-house Axcess System, do we still have access to the outsourcing data?

Yes, all Accugenix outsourcing data and any Axcess data you generate is securely maintained in the GMP-validated Customer Web Portal, available for use with the included tracking and trending reporting tools.

  • How accurate is MALDI-TOF?

This technology can outperform off-the-shelf ID systems while approaching the accuracy of DNA sequencing with AccuGENX-ID, making it ideal and cost-effective for routine ID work.
